Kitchen hoods are supposed to do one thing ““ take the smoke from range cooking and send it far far away from the interior of the house. Traditional hoods are large, somewhat boxy, and decidedly silver in color. But that‘s all changing. The kitchen hoods available today promise to be commercial-grade in power and aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Styleture showcases a new line of sleek, modern kitchen hoods by Robert Brunner, founder of Ammunition Design Group based in San Francisco. Brunner, famous for influencing the look of Apple‘s Powerbook, collaborated with Zephyr, a company that designs ventilation hoods. The result is the ARC Collection, a series that breaks the mold of yesterday‘s hoods by bending steel, glass, and wood in minimalist lines and angles.

The Zephyr Duo, pictured above, has poplar wood on top. If Zephyr‘s mission is to create hoods that do “more than vent air,” then the Duo manages to be both useful and stylish, satisfying the needs of the home cook and interior designer.

A rain barrel could significantly lower your utility bill, particularly in the dryer months when the lawn accounts for about 40% of household water usage.
